I am sitting in a classroom where it is 80 degrees outside and about 95 degrees inside. At the end of the day around 6th hour it is miserable. I have never been to hell but i suspect that it is something like Central high school at 6th hour during the month of September.
The air is still and so thick that one could cut it with a knife. As I look at the bottle of hand sanitizer on my desk it reminds me of the air in my class room. What makes matters worse is that the 9th graders, innocent children that they are, who have done nothing to anyone have to suffer this fate worse than death daily. As I teach, they sit lifeless on the brink of collapse but good troopers that they are fight everything to stay alert.
If we really want improve education as a nation, the first thing we should do is improve the environment and make it as conducive to learning as possible. Air conditioning would be a start. Adequate computers and cold water fountains would finish it.
Students want to learn but it is hard when they have to struggle to stay comfortable in this tropical rain forest we call high school.
